2. Quit Smoking

Because smoking already lowers your immune functions, you’re more likely to get infections in your gums. Not only is it easier for your gums to become infected, but it’s also harder for them to heal after getting damaged.
3. Brush Your Tongue
If you’re taking care to brush thoroughly twice a day and floss, but forgetting to brush your tongue, your gums will suffer. Your tongue accumulates much of the bacteria in your mouth throughout the day.
By neglecting to brush your tongue, you’re leaving behind bacteria which can spread to your gums and cause an infection.
4. Eat the Right Foods
This may seem like a no-brainer, but eating healthy foods will help keep gum disease at bay. By avoiding sugary foods and eating healthy, you’re doing your waistline and your gums a favor.
It’s important to remember it isn’t necessarily about eating healthy foods – it’s about eating the right foods. Leafy greens and apples are great examples because of their texture.
Due to an apples abrasive texture, it helps to remove plaque while you enjoy a healthy snack. Foods you have to chew more, like leafy greens, cause you to generate more saliva. This saliva washes away bacteria and plaque.

5. Use a Therapeutic Mouthwash
After you brush your teeth and tongue and floss, you’re ready to head out the door or hit the hay. But you should add one last step to your dental routine before calling it quits.
Rinsing your mouth with a therapeutic mouthwash removes food particles, prevents gingivitis, reduces plaque, and slows the speed at which tartar develops. You can find most therapeutic mouthwashes over-the-counter or at your local dentist’s office.
